The world of teaching has changed since I was in elementary school. The lessons I remember learning in art class between grades 3 and 5 seem almost outdated. While their content is still important (things such as the elements of design) the way in which these methods are taught are so different now. There is a fine line between teaching children the new technology in the ways of art and cutting out more traditional methods of art making.
When I see the new technology I am concerned that eventually all curriculum will be taught online and have not seen many online curriculum's in the way of art. Art requires a hands on approach and it is necessary for all children to experience and learn the techniques in order to grow as individuals.
This is just a rant; a concern of mine. I feel the need to engage the children using technology relevant to the student's outside experiences, but at the same time do not want to loose the personal connection the material, classmates, and teachers.

ReplyDeleteThis class is about technology as another tool in your toolbox. While you will hear me "preach" the wonders of technology, I wouldn't want my own kids only using this in school to learn.
There are some good online curriculums out there but, just like anything else, it is not "one size fits all". So take from here what you can with regards to integrating technology into your classroom and then use it as you see fit.

ReplyDeleteI think that there are many ways to find a happy medium with technology. I agree that it is really important for students to have the hands on experience with art! But, I think you can find ways to teach students technology skills without it becoming the main focus in the class. I use technology for students to post/publish work. I also use photoshop to have students alter pictures to use for projects. One example is having the students alter a picture in photoshop creating different values. After we print the picture we go back to the classroom and do a grid enlargement drawing. Then we talk about value and have then paint the drawing in different values.
